Program for research in applied aeroelasticity
The project is a one-year extension of a long-standing programme on applied aeroelasticity, and in 2006 work was done on further development of tools and models in the aeroelastic design complex.
The main purpose of the project is to ensure the development of an aeroelastic design complex capable of forming the basis of the next generation of wind turbines and ensuring the development of new design trends. The project constitutes a strategic cooperation between Risø, The Technical University of Denmark and the wind turbine manufacturers with focus on an appropriate relation between long-term strategic research, applied research and technological development. The project will be carried out in interaction with other projects and support the education in aeroelasticity. Thus, the project will be essential to maintain the unique Danish position within aerodynamics and aeroelastic research as an element in the vision concerning 'Wind Power Hub'. The following milestones have been defined for the project period of 1 year: 1) Clarification of the aerodynamics for rotors incl. spinner and winglets. 2) Wind tunnel tests of new airfoils. 3) Strategy for reduction of loads and vibrations at extreme wind (parked rotor/idling). 4) Flutter and other torsional vibrations of blades with large deflections. 5) The influence of modeling of nacelle components. 6) The influence of wind shear for the power and interaction with cyclic pitch
The work included models such as 3D Navier Stoke models, aeroacustic models, profile and blade design, aeroelastic codes and loads, aeroelastic stability and new concepts. The project constitutes a strategic cooperation between the industrial sector and research communities and sets the framework for education of researchers. Thus, the project is significant to efforts aimed at maintaining Denmark’s unique position in the fields of aerodynamics and aeroelastic research.
