Free span burial inspection pig - phase B
The overall objective of the development plan is to construct instrumentation for internal on-line inspection of offshore gas pipelines for Burial, Free Spanning and loss of concrete weight coating.
The measuring principle uses analysis of natural gamma radiation emitted by concrete and sedimentary formations to characterise pipeline condition. The measuring principle was confirmed in a Thermie-92 Demonstration Project. However, a natural content of Radon-222 occasionally present in the gas ruined sensor signals of the previous instrumentation. During Phase A (feasibility) of the present project a new gamma detector configuration was designed and tested in full scale. New data analytical procedures were successfully developed to correct detector recordings for the influence of radon present inside the pipeline. During Phase B (demonstration) of the project the new detector system will be mounted in a pipeline pig (FSB-pig) constructed for inspection of 30 inches gaspipelines. Working condition of the FSB-pig under radon-222 exposure will first be tested in a test stand with a 12.5-m long section of a concrete coated gas pipe. The final stage of the project program includes demonstration runs in a 30 inches gaspipeline crossing under the Danish strait named Store Baelt
