Optimizing of grate fired processes for unhomogeneous fuels

The purpose of the project is to improve thermal efficiency/reduce environmental exposure via primary processes - such as combustion processes.

Project description

Requirements for grate fired incineration plants are becoming more stringent. The latest EU directive for waste incineration includes limiting values for emissions of new matters (i.e. dioxin) and made existing limiting values more rigorous. The directive has also sharpened demands for documentation of flue gas temperature and retention time at plants. There is expected in the future increased demands for emission limitations, including limitations reached with combustion process - primary means . Also plant owners require that plants are capable of burning unhomogeneous fuels with a wide range of calorific values with a high total thermal/electrical efficiency. The purpose of the project is to improve thermal efficiency/reduce environmental exposure via primary processes - such as combustion processes, to be achieved by: 1) Developing improved dimensioning, diagnostation and upgrading tools for future plants and upgrading of existing plants by connecting chemical models of incineration processes on grate, furnace room and after combustion chambers with fluid dynamic models for simulation of combustion and flow conditions to and with the third empty pass in the boiler. 2) Developing models for optimization of the operation of grate fired plants based on information regarding local combustion conditions and recirculated flue gas as well as speed for feeding and transport of waste on the grate. 3) Verify the models by carrying out a monitoring program at an actual full-scale plant
