Modelling a down draft gasifier

Institut for Energiteknik

A stationary computer model of a CHP plant for thermal downdraft gasification of biomass has been build in 'Engineering Equation Solver' (EES).

Project description

This process has the aim to make a mathematical model of a traditional down draft gasifier. This model will be used for upscaling and establishing a better understanding of this type of gasifier and to improve the control-strategy

Results

To obtain maximal flexibility it has been necessary to include all the possible components in a biomass gasification system in the model. The model is also a very useful tool in learning about the gasification system due to its user-friendly interface. In order to examine how an inhomogeneous char bed affects the gas flow through the bed, a dynamic model have been developed to describe the flow distribution in a down draft gasifer. The gas flow distribution through the bed was determined using a thin film model approach The temperatures in the bed were determined from a thermodynamic model of the gasification process. The models evolved can be used as a base for design and optirnisation of down draft gasifiers
