Development program for 1.5MWe membrane based MembraneContactor ElectroDialysis (MCED) process for flue gas cleaning

For controlling the harmful emission from coal use for power generation, FLS Miljø is developing a new flue gas cleaning process that promises to be cheaper and to require less space than the conventional technologies.

Project description

For testing of this new flue gas cleaning process, the MembraneContactor ElectroDialysis (MCED) process, which has been demonstrated on bench-scale with good performance results, it is now planned to scale-up by approx. 100 times through the production of a basic module corresponding to 1,5 MWe. This basic module will be the building block of the future full scale plants. The main objective of this project will be the production of 1,5 MWe basic module and testing of MCED process under realistic process conditions, for obtaining the necessary experience from long term operation of the process. The project has been divided in to several phases for manageable project execution. In 1998 the phase 1, comprising the establishment of required design specifications for production of 1,5 MWe basic module, will be implemented, along with testing the feasibility of the MCED process for co-firing with coal and biomass. Production of 1,5 MWe basic module is considered to be the most critical activity of the proposed development program. This will therefore involve several simultaneous design, production and testing activities for establishing the final design specifications for the production of the 1,5 MWe basic module. Successful completion of this development program will put the new flue gas cleaning technology at the forefront in the world and will be a significant breakthrough for controlling the harmful emission from coal-fired and coal-biomass fired power plants
