Determination of 2D saturation profiles in cores

The basic idea of the project was to obtain two-dimensional saturation pictures of the cross section of a borehole core by use of transmission measurements with parallel gamma-beams through the core and measurements on gamma-quanta which had been scattered by a given angle at different positions in the core.

Results

The first step was to make a x-y-z-table to be used in the measurements function properly. This was accomplished after a number of unexpected problems had been solved. In the first measurements a scattering angle of 90 deg. was used since it permits a relatively simple treatment of the results. However, the count rates obtained was too low. Since Compton scattering mainly occur in forward direction it was attempted to increase the count rate by use of a scattering angle of 40 deg. Even in this case the count rate was too low. To get an acceptable result the measurement time for one measurement was more than 1 hour and to get an acceptable picture resolution, more than 10 measurements were needed. A high background count rate added to the problem. These problems may be solvable, but it will demand a new and significantly more expensive set-up. Finally, there were problems which can undoubtedly be solved, with the theoretical model to be used in the interpretation of the measurements. After 7 month of the one-year project had elapsed, the scientist who was the central person in the project, was offered a permanent job in the industry, and he left the project. It was attempted to get a new scientist for the project, but without positive result. It may be concluded that measurements on scattered quanta yield too low count rates to be of practical value. This method can not compete with transmission measurements, even if the interpretation of the data will in some cases be simpler
