Development intended for consecutive demonstration of combined heat and power production using wood pellet gasification in an open core gasifier (in relation to EU-concerto 2 - Green solar cities project)

The Castor plant’s gasification reactor is developed to gasify wood pellets instead of wood chips, and an aesthetic and technically efficient design of the plant is developed for adaptation into a residential area in Valby. The EU Concerto programme installs a 300 kW electricity and 600 kW heat demonstration plant in Valby.

Project description

The present EFP project is correlated to the EU Concerto II supported project Green Solar Cities. The aim is implementation of an new energy supply system with biomass CHP (Combined Heat and Power) and solar energy as the main production facilities. In the EFP project Biosynergi Proces ApS will develop and make appropriate test for examination of a gasification plant for CHP production with wood pellets. The project will take advantage of the operation experiences and the facilities at BioSynergis present wood chips gasification demonstration plant, which is located at the district heating plant in the town of Græsted, Denmark. Thus, the development activity mainly needs to focus at development of a new gasifier inner core dedicated for wood pellets. For the purpose of testing the new wood pellet inner core it will be installed in the existing gasifier of the demonstration plant. When the final test is terminated the original inner core for wood chips will be reinstalled. The final design of the gasifier will be applied in the next step in the EU project, where BioSynergi Proces ApS is intended to establish a 300 kWel/600 kWheat wood pellet gasification plant and bring it into operation. This activity is not included in the present EFP supported project. Finally the project includes a task regarding the challenge of integrating the design and infrastructure of a wood pellets gasification plant in a domestic urban area

Results
As an aspect of an EU Concerto project, BioSynergi Proces developed and tested a reactor element in its Castor gasifier to enable it to gasify wood pellets instead of wood chips. The modified plant was tested for 750 hours, 130 of them involving engine operation and CHP. Gas production showed excellent stability, while engine operation failed to meet expectations. During the project period, the price of wood pellets became so high compared to wood chips that the marginal financial advantages of wood pellets disappeared. When the project ends, a gasification demonstration plant is to be constructed in Valby, and it will be based on wood chips. (Energy 10)
