EcoMotion R and D. Methanol fuel cells for transport
The project objective is to mature the HT-PEM fuel cells (RMFC technology), which use reformed methanol. The project shall, among other things, reduce emissions and prove the efficiency of the system. In addition to this, it will be developed an intelligent battery system. The final result of the project targets primarily the transport sector.
The main purpose of the present project is to bring Reformed Methanol Fuel Cell (RMFC) systems to a market entry level within the niche transport segment. Initial results from the prototype vehicle developed in the on-going EcoMotion demonstration project (EUDP J.nr. 64009-0017), have revealed that the present technological state of the installed RMFC systems are not adequate and therefore not deployable in a fully commercial market. The present project therefore seeks to mature the current technological state of the RMFC technology, by focusing on very specific research topics, which will solve the current problems detected from the initial EcoMotion demonstration results
The following issues are targeted in the project: 1) Emissions from the RMFC system must be lowered to an acceptable level. 2) the module start-up time and energy requirement must be lowered. 3) the system efficiency must be further optimized. 4) the vehicle power train components (battery, motor controller and RMFC) must be better integrated and 5) finally better battery charging routines must be developed
