Wave Dragon 1.5 MW North Sea Demonstrator - Phase 1
The next step in the development of the Wave Dragon technology is the deployment of a full-scale device in open sea. The development of a 1.5 MW Wave Dragon demonstrator will be based on experiences from 20.000 test hours with a smaller prototype. Deployment of the demonstrator offshore Hanstholm at the test center DanWEC, Denmark, is planned for 2012.
Wave Dragon is a well-proved overtopping type wave energy converter. This project is the phase 1 of a full-scale 1.5 MW demonstrator project at the test centre DanWEC, Hanstholm.
The two main objectives in phase 1 of the WD 1.5 MW project are:
- delivering a certified design of the device and
- delivering a detailed feasibility study of the total project.
The development of the design basis will be performed under the supervision of Sterndorff Engineering. The work shall deliver joint probability metocean parameters for the design of the structure and moorings.
Aalborg University will be responsible for basin tests of a 1:50 model, performing the necessary tests to establish the forces in the mooring cables for varying floating positions of the platform.
MT Højgaard participates in the feasibility study.
As external consultant for Wave Dragon ApS, Dr. Techn. Olav Olsen will provide detailed design of the construction. An outline design of a 4 MW and 7 MW prototype suitable for the deeper parts of the North Sea, the Atlantic Ocean off Portugal and for the Celtic Sea is part of the design work.
As external consultant ESB International will establish the necessary design base for the grid connection.
The project's aim has been to develop a new strategy for wave energy, rooted in a newly established partnership. This was completed ultimo June 2012. The strategy focuses on increasing cooperation within the line of business. The project has developed contacts and collaborative interfaces, leading to joint projects, thus ensuring better use of R & D funds.
In the process, the strategy has been presented to the partnership 22/03/2012 and for Energy, Climate and Building minister Martin Lidegaard 03/19/2012. The participation and response from the partnership at the meeting on 22.03.2012 was very positive and constructive, and there was lively debate both in terms of supporting statements and suggestions for changes / improvements. Additional tangible contributions were incorporated into the final strategy, which was handed over personally to energy, climate and building minister Martin Lidegaard 27.06.2012 according to the project schedule.
Finally the Partnership will continue its operations and has filed an application for EDDP II-2012 on financing of specific activities aimed at implementation of the present project designed strategy
