International network for analysis of power systems with a large share of wind power. IEA Annex 25 - phase 2

Institut for Systemer, Produktion og Ledelse (DTU Management Engineering)

The objective of Task 25 is to analyse and further develop the methodology to assess the impact of wind power on power systems.

Project description

Risø DTU participated in the first three years of IEA Wind Annex 25. Countries participating in phase 1 of IEA Wind Annex 25 in the period 2006-2008 were Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, UK and USA. Expected results of phase 2 of IEA wind annex 25 are: a) An international forum for exchange of knowledge and experiences related to power system operation with large amounts of wind power. Encourage international collaboration on publications of relevant issues to wind integration, drawing from the experience and studies of the several participating countries. b) Enhance the set of case studies on wind power grid integration already contributed to the task with new case studies performed during 2008-2011, especially high penetration cases. c) Generate a list of system operation practices and technologies that mitigate and lower unfavourable impacts of wind power and support enhanced penetration of wind power. d) Create a summary describing the range of wind power impacts and costs for different power systems. e) Further develop guidelines and recommended methodologies for estimating the impacts of wind power on power system reliability and efficiency to a handbook of methods on integration studies

Results

The Task has established an international forum for exchange of knowledge and experiences related to power system operation with large amounts of wind power and has actively followed parallel activities with Transmission System Operators other R&D Task work. The participants have collected and shared information on the experience gained and the studies made up to and during the task. The case studies have addressed different aspects of power system operation and design, mainly: balancing, grid impacts and capacity credit of wind power
