Implementation of models for building integrated heating and cooling systems in BSim

Institut for Byggeri og Anlæg (DTU Byg)

The project developed dynamic simulation models for water-based building-integrated systems (e.g. floor heating, cooling ceilings and building-integrated cooling systems) and implemented them in the BSim simulation program.

Project description

The main purpose of the project is to promote and aid the design of energy efficient building integrated heating and cooling systems. Floor heating is today the most widely used type of heating in domestic buildings, while cooling ceilings and building integrated cooling systems are quickly gaining as an energy efficient alternative to mechanical air cooling systems in office buildings. There are, however, no user friendly simulation models available where the dynamic and complex nature of these systems can be calculated, together with the rest of the building and its systems. In the project dynamical simulation models for hydronic building integrated systems will be implemented BSim, which is by far the most used of its kind in Denmark for simulation of the thermal indoor climate and energy consumption in buildings. Among consultant engineering companies there has been an urgent need for a program that can model and optimize these widely used building installations, especially as part of tightened building regulations. The program will enable the introduction in both new and existing buildings and at the same time give better thermal indoor climate with lower energy consumption. A main part of which will be through improved control of the systems

Results

In recent years, designers have expressed a pronounced need for tools for optimising these widely used installation systems and with the new energy requirement, this need will be increased considerably. The programme offers better possibilities of designing energy-efficient buildings with lower energy consumption and improved thermal indoor climate as the models allow better system control and adjustment.
