Estimation of extreme response and structural reliability of wind turbines under normal operation by means of controlled Monte Carlo simulation

Aalborg University and Risø/DTU have developed a model to estimate responses and structural reliability of wind turbines under normal operation. Various Monte Carlo simulation algorithms were tested in the project, and the results were published in two scientific articles.

Results
Up until now the project has proceeded according to plan. During the project period, a simplified 5 degrees of freedom model with pitch and generator control of a 5 MW wind turbine has been developed. The model is used to test different variance reduction Monte Carlo methods. Several of these methods function best at much smaller systems. The tests are expected to continue until the end of July. The PhD student affiliated with the project has been in Vienna on a 3 month study with Professor C. Bucher where the process of choosing a suitable simulation method will continue. During the course ofthe project, different crude Monte Carlo simulation algorithms has been tested in connection with a journal article which has been submitted for possible acceptance in Probabilistic Engineering Mechanics. In addition, another conference article has been published. The focus of the article was on generation of turbulence in the rotor plane based on a filter method which will be applied in the final simulation method
