Prediction and reduction of noise from wind turbines

Institut for Mekanik, Energi og Konstruktion
The project concerns the modelling of aerodynamically generated sound from wind turbines with the aim of predicting and reducing noise emission from wind turbines.
Project description

The project is divided into three main tasks. The first is to develop an advanced computer model that solves the basic aero-acoustic equations in order to compute the noise generating sources. The next is to develop a design tool that includes a semi-empirical noise model in existing optimizing tools for wind turbines. Finally based on the two other tasks, a realistic model for atmospheric propagation of noise generated by wind turbines in complex terrain will be develloped. A main ingredient in the project is the use of advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), both as a part of the advanced computer model and to derive empirical input to the semi-empirical noise model
