Low-cost oxygen membranes

Afdelingen for Brændselsceller og Faststofkemi
During the project, we developed oxygen membranes based on ion-conducting ceramics. They allow pure oxygen to be extracted from air and be used in ceramic processes.
Project description

The project will develop an inexpensive and durable oxygen membrane based on ion-conducting ceramics. These ultra-thin, ion-conducting and more durable membranes will have myriad applications in future energy systems. Materials and components will be tested in lab scale under industrially relevant operating conditions.

Results

The membrane oxygen can improve the efficiency of many processes in future energy systems - e.g. in new incineration and gasification processes. The membranes were produced by inexpensive ceramic manufacturing processes. The goal of attaining high oxygen flux above 16 ml cm-2 min-1 at 850 deg. C was achieved by using thin membranes based on added cerium oxide under operational conditions relevant to syngas production.
