12MW wind turbines: the scientific basis for their operation at 70 to 270 m height offshore
The project will analyse the atmospheric conditions for the future 12 MW offshore wind turbines that, with rotor diameters of 190 meters, will reach a height of 270 meters. Focus is on wind speed, wind direction and turbulence. The project uses the measuring facilities at Horns Rev offshore wind farm (substation and three meteorology masts).
The project focused on 12 MW wind turbines, i.e. the next generation of multi MW wind turbines being developed for offshore wind farms. These gigantic wind turbines with hub heights of 170 m and rotor diameters of 190 m will reach 265 metres into the atmosphere. The atmosphere over sea was studied between the heights of 70 and 270 m. Experiments ran at Horns Rev (jointly with DONG Energy) and Høvsøre (Risø) with lidar, which method measures wind and turbulence up to 300 m. These are quite unique observations that are highly relevant for large wind turbines. Project website: http://www.risoe.dtu.dk/Research/sustainable_energy/wind_energy/projects/1 2MW.aspx
