The intelligent gas meter

Gas meters of the future need to meet the energy companies’ and consumers’ demand for energy efficiency and smart communication.
Project description

New wishes and requirements for the gas-metering platfom have emerged as a natural consequence of the liberalization of the electricity and natural gas markets. In future, intelligent meters will contribute to ensuring stronger competition between the suppliers by means of easier supplier improved energy supply security. Project purpose: Measurements of natural gas consumption in domestic households and light industry is based on a technology that dates back more than 100 years. This technology in inexpensive and stable but quite incapable og meeting the future requirements on a liberalized gas market. The goal is to use modern technology to develop a new intelligent gas meter that is capable of satisfying the requirements of our society as well as the distribustion companioes and the consumers. The perspective: An intelligent gas meter will entail a number of advantages for the gas meter platfom, for example: - More accurate consumption measurement. - Billing of actual consumption. - Dynamic tariffs. - Prepayment possibilities. - Remote reading. - Prepared for addition og hydrogen to the gas network. - Prepared for addition og biogas to the gas network. - Remote shut off as a safety precaution. The smart gas meter - typically wireless - will be in constant contact with the gas supplier, delivering an array of factual data which can also be used to optimise energy efficiency and capaciti utilisation hereby reducing CO2 emissions

Results

A clear common goal has been to develop the right meter at the right price, and although there have been delays along the way in completion and testing of the first prototypes, this project has formed a good basis for enabling the parties in teh project group to optimise the individual components in the design of the new gas meter to upgrade it to a commercial product. The preliminary phase focused on investigating and establishing possible metering principles, and the project subsequently focused on communications and user interface. A patent application has been submitted, and another three-five applications are on the way. (Energy 11)
