Development of 2nd generation bioethanol

The aim of the platform is to increase the potential for efficient production of 2nd generation bioethanol based on straw and other crop residues.
Project description

The objective of the platform is to identify and solve the most significant technological challenges of cost-effective production of 2nd generation bioethanol based on straw and other crop residues. The platform is based on the two dominant Danish concepts developed by BioGasol and DONG Energy (IBUS), respectively. The work includes benchmarking of pre-treatment, fermentation and distillation methods used in the two concepts, and also a characterisation of the end products. Moreover, concept studies will be made of how to integrate a bioethanol plant into power plants and refineries. Preliminary results from benchmarking indicate significant differences in the two pre-treatment methods, while no significant differences have been found in the composition of the biomass (straw) after the pre-treatment. In the time to come, work will continue on researching sugar recovery and possible ethanol output from the two processes. Concurrent with the work in the platform, several of the partners are working on constructing two demonstration plants in Denmark that are expected to produce bioethanol for transporting guests at the UN climate conference in Denmark in 2009

Results

The objective of this platform is to identify and find solutions to technological barriers to cost-effective production of 2G bioethanol based on straw and other crop residues. The point of departure was two Danish concepts developed by BioGasol ApS and DONG Energy A/S. Solutions have been developed to technical problems in the processes, which can now be conducted at significantly larger scale. Good results have been achieved from testing different enzyme combinations and organisms (bacteria and yeast strains) to convert C5 molasses, which can increase the yield of ethanol and minimise energy consumption. The platform has formed an important basis for national dialogue on the possibilities for using residue biomass for 2G biofuels. (Energy 11)
