Biomass technology - efficiency and improved working environment
Exposure to microorganisms, endotoxin and dust was higher at biofuel units than at reference units. A clear correlation existed between work-related nasal symptoms and the degree of exposure. Concentrations of microorganisms and endotoxin were generally high in areas around straw shredders and at straw storages. At straw reception, an increase in particle concentration was found. Through technical initiatives, it became possible to reduce dust around the straw shredder considerably. Similarly, the project reduced dust by using an improved central vacuum cleaner instead of a broom.
