The project was the first of a total of five phases, aimed at better understanding and modelling of the dioxin-formation mechanisms in waste-incineration plants. New insight was gained, which may result in design improvements during the planning and design phase so that dioxin formation can be reduced. Phase 1 of the project quantified the fuel and combustion parameters that mostly affect dioxin formation. This mainly concerns the sulphur and chloride content in fuel, the secondary combustion temperature and incomplete combustion. Work will continue in project 7170.
