Upgrading fuel properties of biomass fuel and waste by torrefaction

The objective of the project is to investigate the process during heat treatment of biomass at 230-300 Centrigrades without air, so-called torrefaction, for potential upgrading of biomass for Danish heat and power production. It has recently been claimed that by torrefying biomass several basic properties of the biomass will be changed.
Project description

The characteristics of the biomass are indeed altered by the torrefaction. The effect is found to be a direct function of the torrefaction temperature used and the residence time in function of particle size, but also the type and species of the biomass has a significant impact on the result.
