European standardization for solid biofuels

The project includes the Danish contribution to the European pre-standardization for solid biofuels in CEN/BT/118. The Danish points of view of the European standardization process have been advanced through this project until the project passed over to the actual standardization in CEN/TC/335, i.e. in the summer of 2000.
Results

The project applies to all parties involved in the use of biomass, i.e. those who either use or generate biofuels or who are responsible for the sale of electricity produced from biofuels covered by the future RE conditions. Among these parties are the authorities, the transmission system operators (Eltra and Elkraft System), planners, vendors of biofuels and plants, power stations, CHP and heating stations, consultants and laboratories. The primary results of the pre-standardization were: Reporting to CEN/BT/WG 108 and presentations at the meetings in the CEN workgroup; The Danish reference group S-358 'Biofuels' was set up under the Danish Standards Association for discussion and development of the Danish position towards the standardization. The solid foundation obtained in that period has proved to be extremely efficient in the subsequent standardization work; We brought focus to on-site methods in European standardization. It was not possible to set up a working group for on-site methods, but in the subsequent standardization, on-site methods are included to a great extent in the working groups. In the individual European countries, national standards for solid biofuels have been developed in certain areas (e.g. sampling and/or measurement of mechanical or chemical parameters). The levels for standards/practices differ much between the countries, and some actual development work is required to implement the national standards in this area. After the pre-standardization (planning phase), it is important that the Danish interests are considered through active participation in the working groups of CEN/TC/335, so the Danish knowledge will influence the future standards concerning characterizing, on-site measurements, sampling and physical/chemical analyses. We seem to gain considerable influence in all five working groups. Denmark is also going to have a significant role in 'BIONORM', an EU funded project for development of the basis of a number of future standards
