Power-to-Gas via Biological Catalysis (P2G-BioCat)

Electrochaea is developing an efficient and robust biological process to store low-cost electricity as renewable gas in the existing natural gas infrastructure. The P2G-BioCat project will allow us to demonstrate the technical and commercial capabilities of our technology at MW-scale and prepare for market entry in 2014.
Project description
Electrochaea is developing a biological process that requires only electricity, water, and carbon dioxide to produce pipeline-grade renewable gas for direct injection into the existing natural gas infrastructure. We are planning to commercialize this technology as a utility-scale energy storage solution in countries with a high share of fluctuating wind and solar energy. Denmark’s market conditions make it an ideal country for the commercialization of our technology and a strong platform from which to enter other European markets. The P2G-BioCat project marks the last stage on our technology development roadmap and will prepare Electrochaea for commercial roll-out. The main objectives of the project are (a) to demonstrate the technical capabilities of our microbes at commercial scale, (b) to obtain relevant knowledge to design, engineer, operate, and maintain our process in a MW-scale facility, (c) to demonstrate the technology’s ability to follow load patterns and participate in the frequency regulation markets, and (d) to obtain market inputs for the refinement of our techno-economic model and business strategy. The achievement of these milestones will support the de-risking of Electrochaea’s technology and accelerate market entry and deployment of our power-to-gas units.
