EUDP13 AdAmmine – cartridge refilling and dosing technology

The project is aimed at developing the concept for refilling of ammonia containers for the reduction of pollution from diesel vehicles, completing an ammonia dosing device which is suitable for use on vehicles, and implementing both parts in the complete system to be mouthed on vehicles.

Project description

Amminex Emission Technology A/S develops markets and manufactures auxiliary systems to reduce harmful NOx emission from diesel vehicles. The general technology for the reduction of NOx is selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), wherein a catalyst reduces NOx to nitrogen and water. This process requires the addition of ammonia to the exhaust gas proceed. The technology is already in the market and is gaining more importance as all newly manufactured diesel vehicles in the EU and U.S. in the next few years must be fitted with a NOx reduction system.
AET has developed an Ammonia Storage and Dosing System (ASDS) which can store and dispense ammonia into exhaust system of a diesel vehicle and remove NOx more effectively than existing technologies – especially in city driving.

Results

The project aimed at the development of ammonia dosing in exhaust systems for diesel vehicles for the catalytic removal of harmful nitrogen oxides from the exhaust. Nitrogen oxides is a health risk in cities. The limits for NO2 is exceeded in many European cities with increased incidence of respiratory illnesses and premature deaths. The existing technology - injection of an aqueous solution of urea which vaporizes and decomposes to ammonia in the exhaust - does not work well in city driving with low exhaust temperature, which contributes in part to the high levels of nitrogen oxides in the cities. Dosage of pure ammonia has a much better effect in urban driving.

The project has addressed two aspects of the ammonia dosing system:

1. Development of a durable ammonia tank for use on the vehicles as well as a replacement concept and refilling concept for this.

Throughout the project we have developed, designed, produced and validated a container and a  refilling process that meets the performance standards and requirements on the vehicles and provide a lifetime of containers that at least matches the lifecycle of vehicles for passenger cars and have a satisfying life for heavy vehicles.

2. Developing a robust ammonia dosing device that meets the standards of the automotive industry and that can be industrialized at competitive prices:

The project has succeeded in turning a prototype concept (control volume dosing ammonia flow manifold ( CVD AFM)) into a functional unit that meets the performance requirements of most vehicles. The dosing unit is lifetime tested and ready for industrialization. The dosing unit is now very competitive.
