A unique and dedicated software tool for small and medium size wind turbines - Online WAsP - is proposed to ensure inexpensive but accurate calculations of energy yields, noise impacts and financial figures for wind turbine projects. Project description

WAsP is the wind industry-standard software for wind resource assessment of wind turbines and wind farms, developed by DTU Wind Energy (DTU) during 25 years. WindPRO is a software package developed by EMD International A/S (EMD) for designing, planning and documenting wind turbine projects. The comprehensive studies entailed by WAsP and WindPRO are expensive, but represent a minor cost of large scale (multi-MW) wind power projects. However, for small and medium size wind turbines (SMWTs), up to 1MW, such analyses are often considered costly and they require experience and insight in wind turbine meteorology. As a result, and given the growing demand for SMWTs, the objective of this project is to develop and demonstrate an inexpensive and user-friendly online version of a dedicated and focused subset of the models within WAsP and WindPRO.

Online WAsP will present several advantages:
a) Designed and tested/validated for SMWTs
b) Low cost;
c) No significant knowledge needed;
d) No need to install due to the web interface;
e) Input interface for the user to insert own data;

Online WAsP aims to reach the following target groups:
(i) Wind turbine developers/manufacturers;
(ii) Turbine owners;
(iii) Planning authorities/municipalities;
(iv) Consultancies;
(v) Large scale project developers.

Results

The project proposal gives the following description of the objectives:

“A unique and dedicated software tool for small and medium size wind turbines – Online WAsP – is proposed to ensure inexpensive but accurate calculations of energy yields, noise impacts and financial figures for wind turbine projects. The Online WAsP solution is built from WAsP and WindPRO technology, and can be run with any level of user knowledge”

An Online tool has successfully been developed, which is inexpensive to use and can be run by users without training. The tool is called www.mywindturbine.com and can make accurate energy yield calculations all over the world.
