Tool for optimization of biogas production – AnaSTYR

Silkeborg, renseanlæg

In AnaSTYR a tool controlling of reactors in which biogas is produced through digestion of biomass is developed. Today online control of biogas reactors is rarely used, and thus a large potential for optimizing the usage of reactor capacity and so enhance the biogas production can be exploited by improving the control process. In this way, an improved technical and economic operation of the plant can be achieved.

Project description

The purpose is to create a tool for monitoring, optimizing and controlling the production from anaerobic digestion of biomass. By utilizing the tool developed it will be possible to maximize the biogas production from treatment of slurry, manure and other biomass. The input will be real time monitoring of the digestion process and analyses. These measuring values represent the actual condition in the digester. Based on these a successive adjustment of set-points is possible. Thereby the feedback from the digesters is directly coupled to the control of pump, valves etc., and evaluation of current process conditions is possible. The project is divided into 2 work packages (WP): a feasibility study and full scale demonstration of the optimization tool and sensors. The main activity consist of a feasibility study, in which the possibility for monitoring and optimizing the anaerobic digestion process based on historical data is investigated and state-of-the-art sensors for real-time monitoring and control are examined. Based on the results obtained, a tool for optimizing the digestion process based on real time measuring values is developed. In WP2 the identified sensors are tested with various control strategies in full-scale operation to fine-tune the algorithms.
