D-Light, Energy saving diode laser lighting

D-Light will develop light sources based on diode lasers and demonstrate application of these light sources in lamp posts. Light sources based on diode lasers have the potential of being significantly more energy efficient than LEDs at high light levels. D-Light will enable transferring light source production back to Denmark.

Project description

D-Light will develop and demonstrate light sources based on diode lasers. Lighting is undergoing a shift of technology, targeting more energy efficiency and less CO2 emission. LEDs are the big winner of the market for new lighting experiencing both market penetration and implementation.

LEDs, however, suffer from a fundamental problem; At high luminous flux the efficiency is significantly reduced. Here, we solve the problem using diode laser technology instead of LED technology. Laser based illumination can be considered an evolution of LED technology, using the same semiconductor compound to produce photons from electricity. But in a laser, the light is emitted in a very thin concentrated beam.

The D-Light technologies will be demonstrated in actuality in a municipality where lamp posts will be set up using lasers as light source. Towards this goal, work will be carried out on diode lasers as a light source, phosphor materials for converting the laser light to white light, design and production of light fixtures with optimum use of generated light as well as setting up lamp posts and investigation of light quality and user perception.

D-Light will contribute to reintroduce manufacturing of light sources in Denmark.
