Increased range of biomass

The project objective is to investigate the economical, practical and environmental properties of using alternative fuels in a Dall Energy multifuel furnace, and to investigate if the nutrients in the biomass ashes can be re-circulated and be used as fertilizer.

Project description

The project will investigate the environmental, economic and energy performance for the use of alternative fuels in a Dall Energy mulitfuel Furnace. The Dall Energy furnace allows for the use of wet fuels and fuels with more ash than other types of furnaces. To get clarity if alternative fuels can be used for energy purposes, will the project carry out full-scale burning tests. The project includes four tests in which selected fuels are tested in a full scale test. During the tests are energy production and environmental conditions: emissions, ash quality and flue gas condensate measured. If fuels with high nutrient content are to be used widely, should the nutrients bound in bio ash be recirculated. The ash must be treated so that nutrients can be recovered. Such study is a key part of the project: A pre-treatment will be made, and the results of the pre-treatment will be verified by soil column experiments. The project also aims to search for new alternative biomass fuels. Fuels are characterized and the potentials are assessed. The project is generally inspired by the expected future problems of obtaining biomass for energy.
