FINE Grinding of straw increase danish biogas production

We will optimize stalk as a biomass. By pregrinding the stalk, we can reduce the residence time in the biogas reactor. The particle size of 05-15 mm. will be much easier to organically convert, and we expect to reduce the residence time of about 30% - at the same time that we increase the gas yield b 10-15% comared to more comact structures.

Project description


The goal of this project is to optimize straw as biomass for biogas production. By fine grinding the straw into granulate/powder; we believe to reduce the residence time of grinded straw in the biogas reactor and increase the gas yield. The small particle size gives a large surface of dry product/biomass and we expect it to be much easier to co-digest with animal manure, instead of conventional methods. The biogas approach of the project is performed by the biogas plant at “Lynggaard Svineproduktion” production site, where manure from local hogs is being degassed. The degassed slurry and straw has a high fertilizer value and can also be reused as a resource in crop production. There have been no previous attempts With biogas production from small fractionation of straw, but it is our reasoned assumption that we can increase the gas yield from stalk by 10-15% and thereby reduce the cycle of degassing by a third. This assumption is supported in particular by Agriculture and Food´s evaluation of biogas and resources from 2012.

The result of this project Will be a full scale demonstration plant.
