Danish participation in IEA Wind Task 29 Mexnext-III

The objective of the project is on basis of participation in the IEA Task 29 MeXNext III to utilize the results from a new wind tunnel measurement campaign on a 4.5m rotor (summer 2014) for validation and improvement of aerodynamic and aeroelastic models used by research institutes as well as in industry. The final result is a reduction of CoE.
 

Project description

The objective with the Danish participation in IEA Task 29 Mexnext III is to utilize the results from a new measurement campaign on the 4.5m MEXICO (” Model Experiments in Controlled Conditions” ) rotor from the summer 2014 in the German/Dutch DNW wind tunnel for validation and improvement of aerodynamic and aeroelastic models.The more accurate models will lead to a
reduction of the safety factors used in the design of wind turbines. This again will contribute to the design of lighter and more efficient wind turbines and to a reduction of cost of wind energy (CoE) necessary for the fulfillment of the Danish Government's energy strategy “Vores Energi” which means no use of fossil fuels in 2035 for production of electricity and heat.
The new measurement campaign on the MEXICO rotor in the summer 2014 became possible after the partners (TU-Delft, ECN and DTU Wind) received funding for free wind tunnel time from the EU Aerospace program ESWIRP. DTU will use several codes well-known within the wind energy research community as within the wind industry. These are the EllipSys3D CFD code, the Actuator Line code (AL) based on the EllipSys3D code, the aeroelastic code HAWC2 and the MIRAS code.
