Demonstration of Novel Biogas Upgrading Technology
The project will demonstrate an innovative environmental-friendly technology for biogas upgrading. The technology uses enzyme-based biocatalysts to accelerate the CO2 absorption. The consumption of electrical power and steam is thereby reduced resulting in expected cost savings of 25 %.
The project objective is to demonstrate a new technology to upgrade the biogas produced at Avedøre Wastewater Center. The upgrading technology is developed by the US company Akermin, in collaboration with the Danish company Novozymes. The technology has been successfully demonstrated capturing CO2 from power plant flue gas. A key innovative part of this project is the production of a new enzyme and biocatalyst and the commercial-scale demonstration for biogas upgrading.
Work programme. The project covers the rebuilding af Avedøre Wastewater Center for biogas upgrading, enzyme up-scaling (Novozymes), biocatalyst up-scaling (Akermin) and supply and installation of pre-treatment and upgrading systems (the Danish company Ammongas). The project also includes a techno-economical assessment of the concept. Individual business plans are made for the participating companies.
Status. A comprehensive test program is planned which is focused on achieving the dimensioning parameters like flow and lifetime of the catalysts. Ultimately, the test results will show if the expected operation parameters can be achieved.
A result is an expected reduction in biogas upgrading cost by 25 %. The technology will be evaluated based on methane loss, energy consumption, potential heat recovery etc. The demonstration includes an assessment of both the technical and economical performance.Key figures
