Heat Pipe Spot Cooling
A wind turbine power converter includes power modules mounted on cooling plates, which cool the component. The heat is transferred to the ambient by use of a water circuit and an air cooler. The modules have a large cooling demand, but a small contact area. This project intends to develop a new method for cooling power modules, to ensure that spot cooling will not become a bottleneck in the future of wind turbines.
Project description
The aim of the project is to develop a system, where a phase changing coolant is utilized instead ofcooling water. A phase changing coolant can achieve heat transfer coefficients which are 10-20
times larger compared to regular cooling agents.
The cooling plates used today uses single phase brines, and YMER Technology has a lot of empiric
data on such systems available. This knowledge cannot be directly transferred to phase changing
coolants. It is therefore necessary to perform a series of experiments to clarify the properties of the
cooling plates, so new models for phase changing coolants can be developed. The traditional
control strategies for coolant systems cannot be used, thus the development of new optimal control
strategies are needed. It has to be understood how system pressure, flow-changes, cooling needs,
temperature profiles, etc. will affect the system. The system will be demonstrated as a prototype in
the laboratory within the scope of the project. After the end of the project the prototype will be
adjusted for production. Likewise, in corporations with Vestas, test on wind turbines will be
performed.
