PowerKey - Enhanced WT control for optimized WPP
Wind farm control is a hot topic, to improve operations and integration of wind farms in the grid. With that, the individual wind turbine controllers come into focus again. In PowerKey, we enlarge the control space of the turbines, prepare their controllers for wake added turbulence, and test the algorithms at our Vestas V52 test turbine at Risø.
Project description
With the rising amount of wind energy in the grid, new requirements have been posed by the grid operators. Therefore, wind farm control has received much attention recently, promising higher power output, lower lifetime loads on the turbine and enhanced grid-friendlyness. A recent example for this is the ForskEL funded project Concert. The wind farm controller works as an overall distributor of downregulation signals to the turbines. However, the individual wind turbine controllers were historically not designed for optimal collaboration with the wind farm controller. The PowerKey project is addressing the need for wind turbine controllers working better together with the wind farm controller, especially the one developed in the Concert project. During the project, the new controller will be developed and implemented on the Vestas V52 research turbine on the Risø campus. A main emphasis of the development is on de-rating control strategies for optimized WF operation and provision of ancillary services through Model-Predictive Control. The verification will entail a significant measurement package including wind, wake and load measurements.
