HEATSTORE - High Temperature Underground Thermal Energy Storage

The aim of the project is to explore the potential for Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES)
in Denmark, analyse existing UTES plants, extract lessons learned, characterize geological
conditions, test new models and tools and provide knowledge and guidelines that can pave the way
for commercial implementation of the technology.
Project description

The HEATSTORE project will provide knowledge for the exploitation of the potential for
Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES) in Denmark through de-risking, cost reduction and
optimization and pave the way for commercial implementation of the technology. The Danish
partners will further gain valuable learning and contribute with own experience through the
corresponding EU Geothermica project.

Existing UTES projects in Denmark will be analysed in terms of subsurface conditions, design,
system integration and performance evaluation, and leassons learned will be translated into general
specifications and design for Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES), Borehole Thermal Energy
Storage (BTES) and Pit Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) systems under Danish conditions as well
as contributions to best practice guidelines.

The activities will include:
- a survey of specific interests for UTES in the five Danish Regions
- characterization and 3D geological modelling of subsurface conditions in selected areas
- testing of new codes and modelling workflows for modelling subsurface dynamics
- testing of models and tools for system integration and optimization
- development of monitoring strategies and plans
- knowledge sharing workshops with stakeholders
