eBRICKS - energy efficient manufacturing of water struck soft mud bricks
The eMURSTEN project develops a new and price-competitive technology for energy efficient production of water struck bricks. Energy consumption is reduced through electrification of machine operation and reduction of the energy requirement for drying and burning the bricks through the establishment of a mortar pocket.
Water struck bricks are the preferred stones for housing construction in North-western Europe. This is due to the rustic and nuanced surface of the stones. Approximately 255 million water struck bricks are produced annually in Denmark, and around 160 million stones per year in the rest of the European market. Demand is rising.
Fr. Petersen Maskinfabrik A/S has a leading market position within machines for water struck bricks, which are massive stones. However, a mortar pocket can reduce the consumption of materials and hence the energy consumption for drying and burning of the bricks. At the same time, electric drives are not speed-regulated and energy-optimized. In addition, energy consuming compressed air is used.
The eMURSTEN project develops an energy efficient technology for production of water struck bricks. Energy consumption is reduced through electrification and lower energy requirement for drying and burning the bricks.
Innovation efforts include: (1.) Electrification: Energy-efficient solutions for fully electrified machine operation, (2.) Mortar pocket: Technical solution that can make void cavities of approximately 10% in the bricks without deformations that damage quality or aesthetic expression, (3.) System integration and general machine optimization: Innovative modularly designed design and general machine optimization using new materials and filter systems.Key figures
