Bornholm Smartgrid Secured by grid connected battery systems - BOSS

Institut for Elektroteknologi/Department of Electrical Engineering
The objective of the BOSS project is to develop and install a large-scale battery energy storage and subsequently demonstrate and study how this can improve future energy systems based on wind and solar power. It is anticipated that a fully developed BESS platform may help expose new business potentials for Danish industry, and further attract national and international interest and investments.
Project description

The goal of the BOSS Project (Bornholm smartgrid secured, - by grid connected battery systems) is to develop and demonstrate advanced battery energy storage system (BESS) solutions utilizing existing strength positions of Danish industries. BOSS will develop and demonstrate cost-effective and market-based BESS services opening new Danish business opportunities in a fast growing global market.

A full operational grid-connected 1MW/1MWh BESS will be integrated in the Bornholm power system within the first part of the project allowing a testing period of up to three years within the expected project duration of almost four years.

All development, installation and operation are carried out within the BOSS consortium. Thus, the project exemplifies a close and strong collaboration between academia, the Danish industries and the local power authority and system operator at Bornholm.

A fully functional platform, testing BESS businesses and operation, constitutes a strong asset that can be used to generate further activities in both research and commercial real-scale testing and specifically adds an important storage aspect to the portfolio of test zone Bornholm. Based on a successful execution of the pilot and demonstration the achievements will be exploited to attracting future national, European and international projects.
