PowerUp

This project aims at discovering the economic potential for electrification of the industrial sector by
means of extensive high-temperature electro-mechanical heat pumping. The goal is to reduce CO2
emissions significantly by substituting heat or steam, generated from combustion of fuels, by
upgrading excess heat in temperature by heat pumping.
Project description

The expected relative reduction in CO2 emission by substituting heat generated from combustion of fuels with internal process heat pumping is around 85% using the 2017 electricity grid mix. The heat pump (mechanical compressor) is driven by electricity, having low CO2-emissions related. In 2017, the CO2-emission level in Danish electricity grid was in average below 200
g/kWh and still decreasing.

High-temperature heat pumping (here defined as heat delivered above 100 C) is still unusual, not mainly because of technology limitations but rather because of lack of economic incentives (costs of electricity and fuels and low taxation on CO2-emission). The cost of high-temperature heat pumping technology is expected to decrease while the market grows.

WP 1: Description and status of relevant technology (turbo compressors working on steam, reversed Brayton etc).
WP 2: Investigation on potential through case studies applied at four project partners (Equinor Refining Denmark, Nordic Sugar Nykøbing, Akzo-Nobel Salt and Arla Foods) all having processes that are relevant for internal process heat pumping.
WP 3: Evaluation of technology risk and matureness. Economic risks associated with cost of commodities.
WP 4: National upscaling of identified potential.
WP 5: Suggestions for focus areas, technology development etc.
WP 6: Reporting and dissemination.
