A novel node design using HIgh strength steel for JACKet structures (HiJack)

The cost of offshore jacket foundations needs to be lowered to make this foundation concept competitive. The purpose of the project is to mature and develop a novel offshore jacket node concept, using high strength steel and to do research in fatigue optimization of this concept. The new node concept is estimated to decrease the cost of offshore jackets by up to 20%. 

Project description

The project will develop and mature a novel high strength steel (HSS) node for offshore jacket foundations. This will be done using known techniques, which will enable a relocation of welds to less critical areas, thereby increasing the fatigue life of the node. The technology is known but must be matured to be used for offshore structures. In the project, 7 work packages (WP) are planned, which will mature the concept to TRL5-6. The result of the project will be cost-efficient nodes, which can reduce the jacket structure cost with up to 20 %. In WP1, the initial ideas based on design and business case considerations will be developed. The design ideas will, hereafter, be analytically validated in a full jacket structure (WP2). The novel node will lead to necessary improvements in fatigue estimation and knowledge of material properties, which will be investigated in WP3. In WP4 manufacturing parameters and steel analysis will be investigated. In WP5 experimental validations of sample specimens will be made to investigate HSS. Large-scale testing will be made in WP6, to validate the critical parameters from previous WPs.
