TOPChargE - variable Topology battery system for Optimising grid load during high-Power Charging of Electric vehicles

TOPChargE aims to mature, validate and demonstrate a new battery buffered Electric Vehicle High Power Charger and assess its technological, economic and environmental sustainability.
A unique charger, easy to move or upgrade, due to the modular design and low connection fees. Support charging of any EV independent of the battery voltage.
Project description
The TOPChargE project aims to mature, validate and demonstrate TOPChargE, a novel High-Power Charging (HPC) prototype for Electric Vehicles (EV). The prototype will be centred around a variable topology battery solution. Our novel battery-buffered HPC (B-HPC) will have an efficient Energy Management System, allowing it to act as a buffer towards the grid, lowering grid peak loads during EV charging. When the HPCs are idle, the B-HPC can be used for ancillary services, improving the cost-benefit, strengthening grid resilience and thereby supporting grid integration of renewable energy sources. The B-HPC also acts as a local multi variable-DC powerline grid, enabling easy addition of DC-input HPCs and carry out load management between all connected HPCs.
Project specific objectives are:
Mature and validate a novel 350kW TOPChargE B-HPC, that:
a. decreases energy losses by >50% compared to current HPCs
b. Is >30% cheaper than existing HPC solutions
c. Has superior scalability and flexibility in energy and power
Establish an efficient grid integration of the TOPChargE prototype.
Demonstrate fully working prototype, with respect to parameters such as overall system efficiency, energy losses, etc., that can be used as pre-marketing.
Ensure scalability of technology and business, preparing TOPChargE for international market roll-out.
