Garden/park waste to garden/park chips

Institut for Geovidenskab og Naturforvaltning (IGN)

The aim of the project is to provide the best possible technological solution for the production of garden park chips with acceptable technical specifications and at the same time pave the way for a new market partly by promoting communication about HPF and partly by seeking to clarify whether the impurities can be brought below a trifle limit and thereby exempting tax.

Project description

Denmark should be supplied with renewable energy, and we want to use our own resources before we import fuels. To achieve this goal, the burning of garden/park waste was exempt from tax (2010). Garden/park waste constitutes an annual resource of 800,000 tons (Seges 2018). Two crucial factors have limited the use of garden/park chips. The physical quality of the garden/park chips have not been sufficient and the content of plastic adds a risk of taxation. This project addresses both challenges. Through an improved production technology, we can achieve a better physical structure and a greater cleaning of plastic.  The plastic residues will be analyzed. Tree test burnings will be conducted on wood chips fired plants inclusive measurements on flus gas, water and ash. The results will be presented as evidence for the environmental effects of the use of garden/park chips.
