BE-Clean: Biogas Electro Cleaning

The BE-Clean project will demonstrate a new cleaning process. The process will remove unwanted
sulfur from biogas. The new process is cheaper than currently available technologies and uses
electricity instead of chemicals, which is an advantage. The project aims to demonstrate the
technology full scale within the next 3 years.
Project description
The international biogas market is growing. In Denmark, the biogas production is expected to have
tripled between 2012 and 2020, and the Danish biogas plants are among the most advanced in the
world regarding biogas upgrading and utilization. Bioenergy is one of the Danish strongholds
within energy technology. The BE-Clean project, will strengthen Denmark’s international position
as a leading innovator in bioenergy and biogas by demonstrating a new desulfurization technology.
The BE-Clean project objectives are:
1. Demonstration of a new disruptive full scale biogas desulfurization process that will allow the
biogas energy production to have > 98 % up time, increasing the bioenergy production.
2. Development of the electro-scrubber technology making it capable of producing sulfur AND
reduce the oxygen content to < 2000 ppm (current technologies > 20.000 ppm).
3. Creating a business model for the new desulfurization process using simulation and
optimization. This will enable biogas producers to apply the new process, which gives more
flexibility, less maintenance demand, and more cost beneficial biogas production. We expect
to create a business case which will reduce cost of biogas energy production by > 20 % for the
desulfurization processes.
