”Direct biogas conversion to methanol via novel combination of dry and wet reformer technology (BIO-ReFuel)”

The objective of BIO-ReFuel is to design, produce and test a small biogas to methanol modular
demonstration plant that can produce 426 liters of methanol from approx. 240 m3 of biogas per
day.
Project description
In the project BIO-ReFuel (phase 2) the objective is to design, produce and test a small biogas to
methanol modular demonstration plant that can produce 426 liters of methanol from approx. 240
m3 of biogas per day (60% CH4 & 40% CO2).
A demonstration unit will be designed and tested. It will be able to run efficiently with or without
external hydrogen supply. Without adding hydrogen, it will be slightly less efficient, but it will
significantly reduce CAPEX and OPEX for our future customers. The main customer segment in
the initial commercialization phase is expected to be small and medium sized biogas plants and
farmers. The commercial versions of the methanol plant are planned to be made in modules of
ISO-size containers. This will enable easy transport on European highways facilitating mass
production based in Denmark.
This project is a natural extension of the EUDP-supported project BIO-ReFuel (phase 1) The
duration of BIO-ReFuel (phase 2) is expected to be three years. The first two years will be used for
design and construction of the demonstration plant, followed by a full one-year test in a realistic
environment at a biogas plant.
