GreenCem
Despite considerable progress on energy efficiency, the use of alternative fuels and clinker replacements, the cement sector has the second-largest share of total direct industrial carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, at 27% (2.2 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide per year, GtCO2/y) in 2014.
Aalborg Portland is by far the single largest industrial emitter of CO2 in Denmark accounting for 2,2 mio. tCO2/y or approximately 4% of the total Danish CO2 emission. Without carbon capture Aalborg Portland will not be able to reach the 70% CO2 reduction target set, on the national level, by the Danish Parliament for 2030.
CCUS activities receive very substantial support in our neighbor countries, Norway and Germany, and there is a substantial risk that Aalborg Portland and Denmark falls behind its direct competitors.
With the GreenCem project Aalborg Portland wish to take an active role towards developing the required technical solutions to make a significant contribution towards the national goals. The GreenCem project brings together strong partners representing the CCUS (Carbon Capture Utilization Storage) value chain.Key figures
