Lubricant oil efficiency for low emission cargo shipping
Develop and demonstrate an innovative system concept that significantly reduces consumption of lubricant oil (40-60%) as well as fuel (up to 2%) on large cargo vessels powered by two-stroke engines.
The “Lubricant Oil Efficiency for Low Emission Cargo Shipping (LubOilEfficiency)” project develops and demonstrates an innovative system concept that significantly reduces consumption of lubricant oil (40-60%) as well as fuel (up to 2%) on large cargo vessels powered by two-stroke engines. It can immediately be in-stalled on the existing fleet of large cargo vessels, and is applicable for future generation cargo vessels applying alternative fuels, where it reduces consumption of lubricant oil for which no feasible fossil-free alternatives exist. The project develops and demonstrates a solution for lubrication of engine cylinders with recycled lubri-cant oil, which is recovered from the engine after use, cleaned, and reinjected into the cylinder. Based on leading competencies within marine engine development and operation, the LubOilEfficiency project develops an innovative system concept that addresses the huge international market of approximately 45,000 cargo vessels. Large reductions in cargo shipping emissions are expected, and even with a small market share, it is estimated that a high market perspective exists.
