LOWCARBFUELSDK HTL-fuels: low carbon fuels for aviation and marine markets

Department of Energy Technology

HydroThermal Liquefaction (HTL) has proven itself as the most resource-, energy- and cost efficient technology pathway for conversion to liquid fuels of a wide range of sustainable feedstocks, including agricultural (manures, straw, cuttings/shavings etc) and urban (organic waste, sewage sludge etc). However, whereas the HTL part of the process is relatively well established from a research & innovation perspective, the upgrading of the crude oil to marketable transportation is lacking in order for the technology to reach broader acceptance and adoption.  Centered around a core of technical research and innovation, focused on refinery operations and catalysis, this project delivers a fully documented go to market strategy for initial deployment and scale-up of HTL-derived sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and marine fuels. Results will include design of optimal upgrading pathways for jet and marine fuels, as well as novel catalytic and fractionation approaches to reducing production costs. The consortium consists of major stakeholders covering the entire value chain, thus ensuring capacity to implement results from the project to significantly support Danish CO2 reduction targets by 2030 as well as 2050. 70 % is directly within reach for the heavy transport sector by the HTL pathway as a transitional technology, with 100 % also within reach by green hydrogen and P2X coupling combined with a long term utilization of HTL as the most effective source of green carbon.
