EAT-pack Edible food films: an environmental and economical sustainable alternative type of food packaging (EAT-pack)

We urgently need solutions to reduce our resource consumption and waste created. We all see in our everyday cooking how plastic waste piles up with 31 kg of plastic waste produced per EU citizen per year [1]. We need to separate waste to mitigate the problem, and food packaging industries are trying to make new types and more sustainable fossil plastics. However, EAT-pack will develop and provide an edible, environmental and economic sustainable, and safe alternative food packaging solution to re-think, reduce, and revolutionize the future food supply. This breakthrough innovation of edible food film (EFF) either melts or dissolves when boiled, baked or added into the pot, creating no waste. Applications of the EFF concept will be showcased by three scenarios of foods with increasing complexity; 1) rice in portion size, 2) frozen pizza and 3) minced meat that will work as EFF model for a large variety of other types of foods. The company CP Kelco and Mikael Eriksen (private) will together with DTU Food provide technical solutions through development, demonstration, and consumer studies to create this green solution. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the ready to market EFF will be performed by KU Food. Through conversion of side stream into edible packaging materials, EAT-pack will eliminate the end-of-life treatment corresponding to a reduction of 1.3-2 kg CO2/ ton and create direct revenue of 100 million DKK in 2030.
