CanDan2 - phase 2. 2nd generation fuel cell systems and large scale demnstration for backing power and materials handling applications

In the Backup Power segment, the fuel cell units have been developed, certified and delivered. A total of 32 fuel cell backup power systems have been delivered to EnergiMidt. In the material handling segment, a 10 kW fuel cell system has been fully integrated in the fork lift truck DanTruck 3000 Power Hydrogen.

Project description

The project concerns fuel cells for emergency power and forklifts and related hydrogen infrastructure. The systems have been demonstrated in Canada and Denmark. Dantruck and H2Logic has developed an integrated hydrogen forklift at 2,5-5 tons where a 10 kW fuel cell system from H2Logic is fully integrated in the forklift.

Results

CanDan 2 Phase 2 is the second phase of a research and demonstration project for fuel cell back-up power systems and fuel cell powered material handling equipment. It is follow-up on Can- Dan 2 Phase 1 where the first research was conducted on both system types.

In the Backup Power segment the fuel cell units have been developed, certified and delivered. A total of 32 fuel cell backup power systems have been delivered for EnergiMidt and are in operation since early 2011. Following this project, EnergiMidt has purchased another 31 systems in order to make a full transition from battery backup to fuel cell backup in their entire broadband network.

In the material handling segment a 10 kW fuel cell system has been fully integrated in the fork lift truck, Dantruck 3000 Power Hydrogen. The result was a much more commercially mature product than expected from the beginning of the project, but the project has also taken a much more ambitious effort than initially expected. The result is a finished 2,5T fork lift truck which was presented at the CE-mat fair in April 2011.

A spin-off form the CanDan activities has been the merger of Dantherm Power and Danfoss fuel cell activities in early 2010 and the following investment in the merged company by Ballard Power System from Canada. This has evolved into a much closer collaboration with a very strong setup of technology, components and market access.
