Self hoisting crane
The self-hoisting crane can greatly reduce the cost of service on wind turbines when major components such as gearbox, generator and rotor needs to be replaced. The self-hoisting crane can substitute a traditional mobile crane or crawler crane. The self-hoisting crane fits into one 40 foot container when transported from site to site.
The objective of the project is to develop a new self-hoisting service crane (SH crane) principle for wind turbines. Such a SH crane will lower the costs when replacing components in wind turbines. The idea is a SH crane that can replace the traditional mobile and tower cranes standing on the ground. This new crane must be able to be carried around in just one 40 ft container. This compactness and mobility are the reason why the component replacement costs will be lowered. The need for such a new SH service crane is based on the general expectations that the most of the older wind turbines need a gearbox replacement during their lifetime. The mass of the gearboxes in the target group is around 15 - 18 ton. The number of these older wind turbines is estimated to 50,000 - 60,000 pieces worldwide.
