Optimization of 2nd generation alkaline electrolysis

This project is about optimization of a prototype developed and build during a earlier EUDP demonstration project called 2nd Generation alkaline electrolysis. The project aims on further development of the electrolysis plant and updating specifications due to installation, service concepts, and user interface. The project will also include preview regarding approval for installation in EU and U.S.A. With focus on the stack and BOP the electrolysis plant will be optimized. Results obtained on cell level in the laboratory will be integrated in the current stack design with efficiency target of 90 %. The process temperature will be increased to 100-l5OC. The development of BOP will include development of a new electrolyte circuit for controlling water level and gas pressure. Stack cooling and water treatment must be optimized. Dtyer and deoxer system must be optimized. Software for modules and system control will be optimized as well as software for user interface and safety circuit. In the end of the project a demonstration plant will be build

The aim of this project has been to further develop and optimize the technology developed in a previous project ”2. Generation alkaline electrolysis device” from laboratory stage to a demonstration unit.
Results

The most important commercial meaning of this project is that the project has provided dispensable knowledge and experience which has been used in the development of the electrolysis plant in megawatt size.

The MW electrolysis plant is under development and it’s expected to be commercialized in 2017

Through the project period the electrolysis plan has been optimized in several ways including “Balance of plant”, stake design, process design, cooling and controlling’s. New concepts for circulation of electrolysis have been developed together with new software for the handling of system pressure and water balance.

Electrolysis stack and the electrodes have reached the next level of development in terms of efficiency, durability, manufacturing processes and approvals. The development has resulted in an electrolysis plant, which is ready for demonstration with CE-approvals. The system is not yet matured for demonstration. Specific development efforts, including long-term testing and cost reduction, which is necessary so that the system can be commercialized

Important numbers obtained in the project:

•                          A system pressure below 30 bars

•                          Efficiency of electrolysis stack over 90 % at 80 degrees

•                          Current density up to 300mA/cm2

All parameters are important in order to achieve overall high system efficiency.
