LINK2009 - phase 2 - demonstration of 2nd generation fuel cell hybrid vehicles and hydrogen refuelling station in Denmark

LINK2009 -phase 2 is a continuation of the LINK2009 Phase 1 that was started in August 2008 with support from EUDP2008 (ENS 63011-0069) covering development of 2nd generation fuel cell hybrid vehicles and hydrogen refuelling stations. The objectives of LINK2009 phase 2 are to: 1) Conduct demonstration of 2nd generation fuel cell hybrid vehicles and hydrogen refueling station in Denmark in order to validate reaching of stated demonstration performance targets on durability, efficiency and price. 2) Support Danish participation in the 'H2 Moves Scandinavia' European fuel cell vehicle demonstration project. 3) Complete two PhD's that are to conduct supportive research for future 3rd generation technology. 4) Plan and secure initiation of 3rd gen. development and deployment activities towards reaching pre-commercial targets. 5) Secure initiation of Int./EU demonstration/deployment activities in DK onwards market introduction in 2015

LINK2009 phase 2 is a continuation of a phase 1 that was ended in March 2010.
Project description

Phase 1 conducted the development and demonstration of a 2nd Gen. fuel cell vehi-cle based on TH!NK and 350bar hydrogen refueling in Copenhagen. Phase 1 also developed 700bar refueling in 3-4 minutes following the SAE J2601 standard.

Phase 2 has involved further improvement of the 2nd Gen. fuel cell vehicle and final-ized development of 700bar refueling. In total 9 vehicles have been demonstrated in Oslo, Norway (5) and Holstebro, Denmark (4). In Denmark the Municipality of Holstebro has acted as vehicle user and the energy company Vestforsyning as oper-ator of a 700bar refueling station in Holstebro.

Below are summarized the most important achieved results:

  • 9 TH!NK FCEVs has been operated for 61.000km during project period
  • 513 kg hydrogen & 292 refuelings at 70MPa conducted at refueling station in holstebro
  • A number of international standards for hydrogen refueling implemented in Denmark
  • Authority expeirences with approval of FCEVs and hydrogen refueling achieved – approval processes and dialog across cities established
  • EU regulation for homologation of FCEVs implemented & used in Denmark
  • National emergency response guidelines for FCEVs and refueling stations formulated
  • New R/D/D projects on hydrogen fortransport initiated – total budget of €36 million
  • Roadmap for introduction of hydrogen for transport in Denmark developed

  • Two PhD projects conducted at DTU within fuel cell systems & hydrogen refueling
