Biomass and biofuel based poly-generation for off-grid and grid connected operation

Stirling DK has designed and built a containerized combined heat and power plant with one Stirling engine and an up-draft gasifier fuelled by wood chips. The plant is fitted into three 20” standard containers excluding the fuel storage and offers a compact fully equipped CHP plant for un-manned operation.

Project description

Stirling Denmark (SD) has developed a unique Stirling engine technology which enables the conversion of low-cost biomass into high-value, CO2 neutral heat and power in small-scale (35-500 kWe) applications. The technology has a global potential as a combined heat and power technology for large buildings and small communities. Furthermore, the technology has the potential to substitute diesel generators as power generation technology in hundred of thousands of installations all over the world. The technology offers customer benefits in the form of cheap CO2-neutral electricity and heat, based on local fuel resources. Specifically the aim of the project is: 1) To make research in possible off-grid solutions. This will require new mechanical engine technology and new control strategies; 2) Develop and demonstrate a Stirling engine based plant which can operate under off-grid conditions and thus prove the potential for the technology as a substitute product for diesel generators; 3) To develop a modular system that enables simple and low-cost transport and erection of the plants (plug-and-play solutions); 4) To demonstrate the fuel flexibility of the technology with a range of solid and liquid biological fuel types; 5) To demonstrate alternative use of the heat generated in situations where heat is not needed.

Results

Emissions from the plant is lower than typical emission limits as measurements show 120 mg/NmH CO, 110 mg/NmH NOx and 6.0 mg/NmH for particle emissions (all measurements are related to dry base and 10% O2) and further the overall efficiency of the plant is above 85% with an electrical efficiency of 16%. During the project the plant was in operation for 1,584 hours producing 36 MWh of electricity. Test of willow chips as fuel showed that it is critical that fuel for the up-draft gasifier meets the fuel specifications especially related to size distribution of the fuel.
